CAM-ready inserts: a pre-flight checklist

A downloaded CAM-ready insert can save hours — but it was modeled against someone else's tooling and material assumptions. Run these six checks before you nest it on a live job.

1. Tool diameter

The insert's toolpaths assume a specific cutter diameter. If yours differs, offsets shift. Verify the assumed tool against your own before cutting anything you can't scrap.

2. Material thickness

Confirm the item was modeled for your sheet stock. A part built for 18mm won't seat correctly in 3/4" without adjustment.

3. Grain and finish direction

Check that grain direction assumptions match how you'll orient the sheet — especially for visible parts.

4. Hardware offsets

Pull-outs, hinges, and slides carry hardware-specific offsets. Confirm the item's hardware brand matches what you'll install (the item page lists it).

5. A test cut

For anything you'll run in volume, cut one on scrap first. Two minutes of test cutting beats a scrapped panel.

6. The seller's README

The README often notes the exact assumptions — tool, material, hardware. Read it before the first cut, not after the mistake.
